26/10/2008 - Make a noise for freedom!

Liberty groups have expressed concern that the General Teaching Council (GTC) has fallen prey to extreme left-wing views. The National Union of Teachers (NUT) call to ban members of ''far-right' groups from teaching is for many the 'thin end of the wedge'.
Unfortunately the GTC has largely fallen under the control of the NUT and they are beginning to act on their extreme views.
They have charged a teacher (Adam Walker) and President of a rival Trade Union (Solidarity) with expressing views 'suggestive of racial and religious intolerance' on a local Internet forum. A charge which he denies. A GTC hearing will take place in Birmingham on November 17th to hear legal argument.
Solidarity's General Secretary Patrick Harrington said "We believe he faces a kangaroo court. We are concerned that one panel member is a former President of the NUT who is clearly biased. Whilst we will be representing our member at the hearing we welcome the move by the liberty group 'Civil Liberty' to call for a  picket on the day. Once again Civil Liberty is in the forefront of the fight for workers rights. What a contrast to the silence on these issues from that other group named 'Liberty'!"
